On June 7, the Dane County Board of Supervisors discussed a proposed ordinance which would ban the use of elephants in circuses. After hearing testimony from both supporters and opponents of the ban, the Board voted 23-9 to approve an amendment banning circuses that use elephants. However, the amendment will allow Zor Shrine Circus to fulfill their current contract with the county-owned Alliant Energy Center arena. Although the Zor Shrine has a contract with the arena through 2020, the county will not allow the Shrine to enter into new contracts with circuses that use elephants and will not be allowed to have elephants at all after 2020.
The measure is now being sent to County Executive Joseph Parisi for final approval. |
